Cause: Contrary to what old wives’ tales say, varicose and spider veins aren’t caused by smoking or crossing your legs. “None are correct,” says US vein specialist Dr Mitchell Giangobbe. “It is a condition called venous insufficiency, which occurs when blood pools in the leg veins from the valves failing inside them.”

Calling card: Twisted, discoloured veins are easy to spot, but not all cases have obvious signs. Dr Giangobbe says damaged veins can be hidden deep in the leg.

“Vein problems often cause progressive symptoms like leg pain, fatigue, and swelling. In some cases, it can even escalate into dangerous problems such as a deep vein clots or leg ulcers,” Dr Giangobbe says.

Cure: Far from major vein stripping operations of old, veins can now be blitzed with minimally invasive catheter-based techniques with as little down time as a day.
