over-pronation

Over-pronation

Telltale sign
Excessive wear to the inner sides of your shoes. Shoes may tilt inwards when on a flat surface.

Care factor
When your foot rolls inwardly excessively on landing, the force effectively puts a load on a twisted foot, potentially causing pain in feet, shins and knees.

Shoe
Running shoes to neutralise overpronation are straighter than shoes designed for supinators. They also have a wider sole and are bulkier. Motion-control shoes can stop your foot from twisting and re-train your gait, which will be evident if your wear pattern changes. Orthotics may be helpful in extreme cases.
